Tokyo Olympics : The first team of Indian athletes set foot in Japan on Sunday morning to take part in the Tokyo Olympics. The team consists of 88 members, including 54 players from India.
Indian archery, badminton, table tennis, hockey, judo, gymnastics, swimming and weightlifting teams flew from New Delhi to Tokyo on a special flight at 11 pm on Saturday. This morning they flew to Tokyo. The Indian men’s and women’s hockey teams had the most players on the plane. Sutirtha Mukherjee of table tennis and her coach Soumyadeep Roy accompanied the team. Gymnast Pranati Naik, archer Atanu Das and his wife Deepika Kumari.
The Indian team members went to the Games Village after undergoing all the tests at the airport in compliance with the corona infection prevention rules. “Our team has reached Tokyo safely,” the Sports Authority of India (SAI) said in a statement.
A delegation from the city of Kurobe was present to welcome the Indian team at the airport. They came with a huge festoon. It read, “Support for Indian Athletes, the City of Kurobe.”
Union Sports Minister and State Minister, SAI and officials of the National Olympic Committee were present at the airport on Saturday night to greet the Indian athletes on their way to the Olympics. Everyone present at the airport greeted the Indian athletes with applause. PV Sindhu, Manpreet Singh and the rest of the players got on the red carpet.
Earlier, several athletes who had gone abroad to prepare had moved to Tokyo. Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu was busy training in St. Louis, USA. He arrived in Tokyo on Friday. Indian boxers and shooters were busy preparing in Italy and Croatia. They have already moved to Tokyo from there. Earlier on Thursday, four members of the Indian rowing team started training in Tokyo.
Meanwhile, Sania Mirza and Ankita Raina had their last practice in Hyderabad on Sunday. They will go to Tokyo with the next team.
